CẦN THƠ — National Assembly (NA) Chairwoman Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân has urged the Cửu Long (Mekong) Delta City of Cần Thơ to accelerate work on building and developing the city with a sustainable development pace and resilient to climate change.
Speaking with voters in the city’s Cái Răng and Ô Môn district on Tuesday about the city’s development orientation to become the centre of the Mekong Delta, Ngân said the city needed to build up a medium-term public investment plan for the next five years, especially regarding key and urgent constructions.
She specifically mentioned key projects which have been and will be implemented in the city such as Mỹ Thuận 2 Bridge, Mỹ Thuận-Cần Thơ and Cần Thơ-Cà Mau expressways.
Briefing the local people on the outcomes of the ninth session of the 14th NA, which wrapped up last Friday, Ngân said the NA had decided not to adjust socio-economic development targets of 2020 but assigned the Government to minimise the damage caused by COVID-19 pandemic, allowing the Government to manage budgets and socio-economic development more flexibly within the allocated budget.
At the NA’s 10th session in October, the Government would report back on whether or not to adjust, she said.
Ngân hoped that the people would continue to raise their awareness about pandemic prevention and would not use wild animals as food to avoid the source of dangerous viruses, germs and parasites that can adversely affect human health.
She echoed the praise of voters from Cái Răng District on the implementation of agricultural tax exemption for farmers, saying this was a policy that had a large and important impact, contributing to real current guidelines and views of the Party and the State on agriculture, farmers and rural areas.
Regarding voters’ questions on the overpriced COVID-19 test machines case that occurred at the Hà Nội Centre for Disease Control, Ngân said that authorities had investigated and clarified this case.
“Authorities will strictly handle the law, even without extenuating circumstances,” she stressed.
She also shared with the voters recommendations on handling the current erosion situation in Cần Thơ City, including the two banks of Ô Môn River.
Ngân said that NA would forward the recommendations to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for research.
During the meeting, local authorities from the city People's Committee and representatives of departments, agencies and unions also attended and answered questions and concerns of the voters. — VNS
