HÀ NỘI — Hà Nội is planning to bring the world-famous Formula One car race to the capital, Government Office chairman Mai Tiến Dũng confirmed on Thursday.

During a press conference following a closed regular cabinet meeting, Dũng said that the Law on Sports allowed Việt Nam to host international sports events, including the F1 race.

Hà Nội initially proposed to the Government to organise the race around the iconic Hoàn Kiếm (Returned Sword) Lake and along the adjacent streets in the city centre, but the idea was rejected after thorough reviews by both the city and ministries of planning and investment, and culture, sports and tourism.

The capital then wanted to host the game in the Mỹ Đình sports complex in Nam Từ Liêm District to take advantage of the existing infrastructure there, Dũng said.

“This is very new to Việt Nam but the authorities all support it. A green light has been given for Hà Nội to approach the race organisers,” he said.

“The Prime Minister, however, asked Hà Nội not to spend State budget resources but to call for the participation of the businesses to host the race.”

Thủ Thiêm land inspection

Also at the press conference, Deputy Government Inspector General Bùi Ngọc Lam said that an inspection report over the controversial land clearance in the Thủ Thiêm residential area in HCM City will be released in the first half of September this year.

The inspection wrapped up in July 11 and was undergoing final administrative procedures before it could go public, he said.

The PM ordered the three-month inspection in May due to public pressure following several media reports about the miserable quality of life of more than 100 households who had their houses dismantled by force for land clearance in the developing Thủ Thiêm new urban area.

They have repeatedly filed complaints to the Government to no avail so far, saying that their houses and land were not included in the original project map of Thủ Thiêm and hence should not have been taken away.  — VNS

GDP likely to surpass 6.7%: PM

HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s GDP this year is very likely to surpass the initial target of 6.7 per cent, said Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc on Thursday morning.

Phúc opened the regular cabinet meeting with positive news about the country’s macro economy, saying that 12 out of 12 growth targets set by the National Assembly this year are due to be met, of which eight are likely to see better performance than expected.

Regarding the socio-economic development in August, the PM said that it was generally better than last month with inflation still under control.

The average consumer price index over the past eight months only increased by 3.52 per cent compared to that of the same period in 2017.

Việt Nam so far enjoys a trade surplus of US$2.8 billion, with 25 products having export volumes worth more than $1 billion.

Total registered foreign-related investment into Việt Nam as of August 20 reached more than $24.3 billion – an increase of 4.2 per cent over the same period last year.

More than 87,000 new enterprises were set up across the country so far this year while 21,000 enterprises resumed operations. — VNS
