HÀ NỘI — The first ASEAN Traffic Police Forum, an initiative of Việt Nam, adopted a joint statement at its closing meeting in Hà Nội yesterday, encouraging the bloc’s policemen to foster coordination and share experience.
Over two working days, representatives from the nine ASEAN member states, excluding Brunei, discussed a wide range of topics, including traffic police roles, investigations, accident data collection and driving licences.
Their discussions reflected similarities in traffic conditions. Most major cities in the region have been struggling with traffic jams and complicated road accidents.
According to the closing statement, ASEAN member states will take turns hosting the forum annually. They are encouraged to form a communications network to fight crime and provide technical support for each other.
Major General Trần Sơn Hà, head of the Traffic Police Department under the Ministry of Public Security, said the statement suggests that ASEAN governments recognise driving licences issued by the bloc’s members and agree on common assessments of traffic accidents.
Johanes Agus Mulyono, Executive Director of the Aseanapol Secretariat, lauded the organisation of the first forum, saying it was a great source of useful information.
He expressed his hope that the forum would become an annual event on the Aseanapol agenda. — VNS
