NEW YORK – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Đỗ Hùng Việt attended the 2024 Ministerial Meeting of the Global Governance Group (3G) in New York on September 23 (local time), on the sidelines of the High-Level General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly’s 79th session.

Chaired by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Singapore, the event drew top diplomats from the G20 Troika nations and 30 member countries of the 3G group.

In his speech, Việt expressed support for Brazil’s upcoming G20 presidency in 2024, highlighting shared priorities such as sustainable development and climate action, as well as amplifying the voice and interests of developing countries in the Global South.

Sharing the severe impacts of Typhoon Yagi on Việt Nam's economy and its people, the official urged the G20 to continue prioritising climate change response efforts, saying that G20 nations need to lead in emission reduction and support developing countries in adapting and increasing resilience to climate change.

He also stressed the need to push for global governance reform based on fairness and inclusivity, aligning G20 efforts with the effective delivery of commitments made at the Summit of the Future.

The meeting culminated in the adoption of a press statement from the 3G group, calling on nations to set aside differences and work toward an open and transparent global governance system that promptly addresses common challenges.

During a working session with Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Climate Action and Energy Transition Selwin Hart a day earlier, Việt mentioned Việt Nam's strides toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and updates on projects under the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) framework.

He suggested UN agencies and partners continue supporting Việt Nam in developing a green and sustainable economy, enhancing its capacity to respond to climate change, and advancing a just energy transition.

Hart, in turn, strongly supported Việt Nam's efforts in its green transition process, pledging to rally partners in prioritising resources for effective JETP implementation. VNS
