HÀ NỘI —  Spreading the word about the sovereignty of Việt Nam has helped create a peaceful environment and maintain integrity for the country.

That was the message from Võ Văn Thưởng, head of the Communist Party of Việt Nam Central Committee’s Commission for Publicity and Education who was speaking at a conference in Ha Noi yesterday.

He said there had been a number of factors that helped raise awareness over important border issues.

These include sea and island claims, land border demarcation, marker planting, and border areas management, which helped ensure a harmony between neighbouring countries.

Thưởng said the time had come to talk to different groups of people, along with localities, to make sure needs are met.

He said agencies needed to study and second guess to make sure they are ahead of the game for international affairs.

But he added that complicated matters would need thorough actions between agencies, as there had been cases where they were passive.

He cited a modest amount of investment for foreign service information work and limited human resources as factors for the ineffectiveness, Thưởng said.

But Thưởng said information technology (IT) and modern communication methods would be crucial to make sure ‘fake news’ is rooted out and the positive image of the Vietnamese people is shared around the world.

Stressing key missions for 2019, Thưởng said relevant authorities should dig deeper into the significance of foreign service information and challenges to carry out future work.

At the event, the commission presented merit certificates to 28 agencies, including Việt Nam News – the only English-language daily in Việt Nam which is published by the Vietnam News Agency, and nine individuals for their excellent accomplishments in external information work on sea and border-related issues in 2018.—VNS
