CẦN THƠ — National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân met with voters in Ninh Kiều District, the Mekong Delta city of Cần Thơ yesterday, to listen to their opinions on issues of public concern.
Local voters’ questions focused on public investment, environmental protection, child protection, food hygiene and safety, anti-corruption, social welfare and health insurance, among others.
Responding to queries on preventing corruption, the top legislator said the Party and State attach importance to the work.
She revealed that Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng, as head of the Central Steering Committee for Anti-Corruption, directed agencies to bring a number of corruption cases to light, with 12 cases set to be clarified in 2017.
Hearing voter’s opinion that reforms to the educational system should be limited to avoid confusing pupils and their families, the NA Chairwoman said the Ministry of Education and Training would consider this issue.
Regarding a proposal to increase penalties for crimes involving child sexual abuse, the environment and food safety, Ngân said the NA was working to complete the legal system, adding that the revised Penal Code features new crimes relating to food safety, the environment and drug crime, with increased penalties.
On measures to minimise child sexual abuse, she said the legislature assigned one of its bodies to supervise this issue with the Ministry of Public Security providing information.
Answering voters’ questions on aiding pig breeders who suffer losses due to falling pork prices, she attributed the situation to excess supply and inaccurate market forecasts.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has taken measures to reduce difficulties facing the breeding industry, she said, urging agencies to give more exact market forecasts.
Regarding the proposal to build rice trademarks, she said the NA would review relevant legal policies.
Voters also raised their concerns about illegal investment projects, social welfare and the increase of health insurance premiums.--VNS
