HÀ NỘI — At the invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc and his wife, leading the Vietnamese delegation, left Hà Nội for India to take part in the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit as well as the celebration of India’s 69thRepublic Day.

Accompanying the Prime Minister on the important trip will be Trade Minister Trần Tuấn Anh, Environment Minister Trần Hồng Hà, Deputy Minister of Defence Nguyễn Chí Vịnh and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyễn Quốc Dũng.

With the theme “Shared Values, Common Destiny,” the ASEAN-India summit is considered a significant occasion to further boost the already flourishing ties between Việt Nam and India. The event would also be a demonstration of Việt Nam’s coordinating role in the growing relationship between ASEAN and India.

In 2017, India and ASEAN marked 25 years since they established the first formal dialogues, 15 years since setting up high-level dialogues, and 5 years of their strategic partnership.

The relationship between the South Asian country and ASEAN continues to develop comprehensively on all three pillars – security, economics, culture and society. Bilateral trade between the two partners has increased 2.5 times over the last decade, reaching US$76 billion in 2017.

Currently, ASEAN is the 4th largest trading partner of India, while India remains the 6th biggest trading partner of ASEAN. India is implementing a development fund of $75 million to support its enterprises investing into ASEAN countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Việt Nam, among others. — VNS
