National Assembly set to vote on new President

HÀ NỘI — The National Assembly (NA) is expected to vote on the new State President on the first day of its eighth session on Monday in accordance with the Constitution and laws.

This is part of the personnel-related tasks in the tentative agenda for the upcoming meeting of the 15th-tenure assembly, revealed at a press conference on Sunday.

Previously, the 10th session of the 13th Party Central Committee reached a consensus on qualified candidates for the position of President for the 2021-26 term.

The eighth session of the 15th-tenure NA will take place over 29.5 days in total, with two phases from October 21 to November 13 and from November 20 to 30.

The NA is expected to review and vote on 15 laws and three legal resolutions as well as commenting on 13 law projects.

The assembly will also evaluate socio-economic results, including recovery from Typhoon Yagi, the 2024 State budget and financial plans for next year, social housing and the real estate market, anti-corruption and crime prevention efforts, as well as reviewing voters’ recommendations.

Other topics of discussion include personnel work within the NA’s authority, the establishment of Huế as a city under central authority, the national target programme for cultural development in 2025-2035 and key infrastructure projects.

Given the importance of this NA meeting, Party General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm is expected to deliver a speech at the opening session.

Lâm was sworn in as President for the term 2021-26 on May 22. He has also taken on the role of the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Việt Nam since August 3, following the passing of the late Parader Nguyễn Phú Trọng.

In preparation for the major law projects, issues and monitoring projects at this meeting, the NA Standing Committee held multiple working sessions with the Government.

A total of 132 out of 154 official documents for this NA session were sent to the deputies for review in advance. Q&A sessions with officials are also scheduled in this meeting. — VNS
