HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam and Myanmar should step up co-operation in fields of their strengths for mutual development, said President Trần Đại Quang.
He greeted visiting Speaker of Myanmar’s Parliament and House of Nationalities Mahn Win Khaing Than in Hà Nội yesterday.
Việt Nam values friendship and co-operation with Myanmar, he stressed, noting that thriving diplomatic ties and productive economic relations allow the countries to expand their partnership.
Quang said he supported the two lawmaking bodies boosting their cooperation given as this lays a foundation for bilateral friendship to grow further.
He stressed the need to maintain existing co-operative mechanisms, increase visit exchanges and improve relations between localities and people.
Vietnamese businesses are keen to invest in Myanmar, Quang said, asking the ASEAN peer to support Vietnamese investors in banking, aviation, telecommunication, mining, tourism, agriculture and consumer goods.
He took the occasion to thank Myanmar for backing Việt Nam at regional and international forums and hoped the countries would hold more political consultations and support each other at international organisations to which both are members, especially ASEAN and the UN.
The Myanmar Speaker said he was impressed with Việt Nam’s development achievements and realised that Myanmar could learn from Việt Nam’s experience.
He detailed the activities of the Myanmar Parliament, noting that his country is working to revise the law on foreign investment and the law on foreign companies to lure more foreign investors.
Speaker Mahn Win Khaing Than is currently on a week-long official visit to Việt Nam, starting from May 15.
He held talks with National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân and met with Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng and Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc.— VNS
