HÀ NỘI — President Trần Đại Quang has praised 70 underprivileged students for their efforts to overcome a range of difficulties at school.

At a meeting in Hà Nội on June 18 with students from 14 cities and provinces across the country, President Quang mentioned the fact that nearly 1.5 million out of 26 million children in Việt Nam are still encountering difficulties such as disabilities and child labour.
According to the president, protection, education and care for children, especially disadvantaged kids, should be made a public priority, and violence against children should face strict punishment.
He emphasised the need to enhance the protection and education of children, particularly those from disadvantaged or ethnic minority, remote or isolated areas.
He asked the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs and relevant ministries and agencies to continue to implement the 11th-tenure Politburo’s Directive No 20-CT/TW on strengthening the Party’s leadership on caring for and educating and protecting children.
The meeting took place on the occasion of the action month for children themed “For Children’s Safety and Healthy Living”, which was launched in the northern province of Phú Thọ on May 27.

A series of events to support children in need have been held during the action month, including entertainment activities and free medical check-ups and scholarships for children.
The National Fund for Vietnamese Children plans to allocate more than VNĐ14 billion (US$616,000) for activities to support 5,000 children from difficult backgrounds across the country. — VNS
