HÀ NỘI – The Investigation Police Agency under the Ministry of Public Security yesterday said that it issued a temporary detention order for Trịnh Xuân Thanh, former Chairman of the PetroVietnam Construction Corporation (PVC).

Issuing the warrant aims to serve investigations into the charge of “deliberately violating State regulations on economic management causing severe consequences,” the agency said.

Thanh, 51, fled Việt Nam after he was found to have violated State regulations on economic management resulting in losses of nearly VNĐ3.3 trillion (US$142 million) for PVC during his leadership. On July 31, Thanh gave himself up to the Investigation Security Agency after nearly a year of evading arrest.

Also yesterday, Hà Nội City’s People’s Court said the trial of Hà Văn Thắm, former chairman of Oceanbank, and accomplices will reopen on August 28.

A total of 51 defendants were charged by the Supreme People’s Procuracy for “embezzlement of property” , “violations of regulations on lending in the operation of credit organisations”, “abuse of positions and powers to appropriate assets” and “intentionally infringing State regulations on economic management causing serious consequences”, Vietnam News Agency reported.

The trial is expected to last for 20 days. — VNS
