HÀ NỘI — A total of 62 provinces and cities across the country have announced the results of voting for provincial and city people councils 2016-2020, the National Election Council has said.
The report published on the Government website chinhphu.vn on Thursday revealed that southern Kiên Giang was the only province which had not announced election results.
Hà Nội’s election committee publicised 105 elected deputies for the city People’s Council while HCM City also finished their election programme with 30 out of 50 delegates having been voted in National Assembly term 2016-2021.
By-elections will take place in Hà Nội on Sunday at grass-root levels as the city is rushing to add more 122 deputies to the communal People’s Councils, according to Deputy Director of Hà Nội Internal Affairs Department Phùng Văn Thiệp.
In HCM City, voters have selected 105 delegates for the city People’s Council. The number of elected deputies had been announced late last month by the HCM City’s election committee.
Southern Cần Thơ, central Đà Nẵng and northern Hải Phòng cities have also announced the number of elected delegates.
By-elections in Cần Thơ Province took place early this week with 500 registered voters to elect more two delegates for the National Assembly while those in Thanh Hóa Province went to vote for more local people’s councils deputies.
The National Election Council (NEC)’s Office claimed more than 65.5 million voters nationwide or 98.77 per cent of the electorate went to the polls by 10pm on May 22 to elect deputies to the 14th NA and all-level People’s Councils for 2016-2021.
According to Nguyễn Hạnh Phúc, NA General Secretary and Chief of the NEC’s Office, most localities saw turnout of more than 90 per cent.
The central province of Thừa Thiên – Huế and the northern mountainous province of Yên Bái topped the list with 99.99 percent. They were followed by Hòa Bình, 99.98 percent; Quảng Nam and Bến Tre, 99.97 percent; Lai Châu, 99.96 percent and Hậu Giang, 99.95 percent.
The election took place safely and ballot counting was supervised by voters and the press, a new part of the Law on Election of Deputies to the NA and all-level People’s Councils, Phúc said. VNS
