ICA urged to support Việt Nam’s co-operative development

National Assembly (NA) Vice Chairman Uông Chu Lưu suggested the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) continue supporting Việt Nam in improving its co-operatives’ capacity, helping Vietnamese producers penetrate regional and international markets.

HÀ NỘI — National Assembly (NA) Vice Chairman Uông Chu Lưu suggested the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) continue supporting Việt Nam in improving its co-operatives’ capacity, helping Vietnamese producers penetrate regional and international markets. 

He made the suggestion at a meeting on Thursday in Hà Nội with President of ICA-Asia Pacific (ICA-AP) Li Chunseng, who is visiting Việt Nam to attend the 10th Asia Pacific Co-operative Ministers’ Conference. 

The host also called for more technical assistance from the alliance to Việt Nam to help the country to innovate and apply high technologies in agriculture. 

He stressed that the conference provided a chance for Việt Nam to learn from other countries in promoting the role of co-operatives in developing the economy. 

To facilitate co-operatives’ development, the Vietnamese NA issued and amended the Law on Co-operatives three times and adopted a resolution on the development of new-style co-operatives to 2020, he said. 

He revealed that Việt Nam’s co-operatives are in the process of shifting organisational structure, operational model and scale in combination with the programme on building new-style rural areas. 

For his part, Li Chunseng hailed Vietnamese co-operatives’ work and recognised the country’s contributions to the organisation of the conference. 

He said the activities of the ICA and ICA-AP have helped create jobs, boost agricultural production and reduce poverty. 

He hoped Việt Nam would continue supporting the ICA’s activities, including by setting forth measures to foster peace, security, prosperity and sustainable development. — VNS
