PHNOM PENH — The first meeting of the Asian Parliamentary Assembly (APA) Executive Council has called for the building of solidarity and trust to foster peace and stability in the continent.

A Vietnamese delegation is attending the four-day (October 1-4) meeting being held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The delegation is led by Hà Ngọc Chiến, member of the National Assembly Standing Committee and Chairman of the NA’s Ethnic Affairs Council. 

The meeting is a follow-up to those held by the APA’s standing committees, during which the council provided feedback on contents of proposed resolutions. The draft resolutions will be submitted to the APA General Assembly in November 2018 for approval.

President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, Heng Samrin, said Cambodia wanted council members to share experiences and build trust towards achieving APA’s common goals for the sake of peace, stability and co-operation, on the basis of respect for principles of independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs of other countries as set in the United Nations Charter and the 10 Bandung principles issued in 1955. 

The Vietnamese delegation presented its opinions on the draft resolutions and joined discussions on various issues on the agenda of meetings of the APA’s standing committees on Political Affairs, Economy and Sustainable Development, Social and Cultural Affairs, APA establishment, and the Special Committee on APA Financial and Human Resources regulations. 

The Vietnamese head delegate paid a courtesy call on Heng Samrin and also met with delegations from India, Turkey, Cambodia, Laos, Bhutan and the United Arab Emirates. 

On the occasion, Việt Nam invited delegates from all parliaments to attend the 26th annual conference of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum to be held in January 2018 in Việt Nam.

Nearly 200 delegates from 30 member countries are attending the APA Executive Council meeting that ends today. — VNS
