HÀ NAM — The Hà Nam provincial Appeals Court yesterday upheld the nine-year sentence imposed on Trần Thị Nga for spreading anti-State propaganda.

Nga, 40, of Phủ Lý City, was convicted on July 25 this year. She consistently claimed her innocence and appealed to the higher court.

According to the indictment by the provincial People’s Procuracy, between September 2014 and January 2017 Nga opened a blog and Facebook with usernames of Thuy Nga and Tran Thi Nga, along with a YouTube account, Trần Thúy Nga, "to spread reactionary ideas and distort guidelines and policies of the Vietnamese Party and State." 

The procuracy also said that Nga wrote and put up many slogans defaming Party and State leaders as well as security forces, and called for a boycott of the elections to the 14th National Assembly and all-level People’s Councils for the 2016-2021 tenure. 

The court rejected her defence and sentenced her to nine years in prison and another five years of home confinement after her prison term ends. — VNS
