BANGKOK — Việt Nam’s Minister of Public Security, Tô Lâm, has proposed that Thailand accelerate work on a criminal extradition agreement between the two countries.
Lâm made the proposal at a meeting with Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha during a visit to the country to attend the first high-level dialogue between the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security and the Thai Royal Police in Bangkok yesterday.
PM Chan-o-cha described the Vietnamese official’s trip as a contribution to boosting the relationship between the two countries, in general, and between their security agencies, in particular.
Minister Lâm spoke highly of the role and position of Thailand in the formation and development of the ASEAN Community in the context of complicated developments in the region and the world, including those related to transnational and drug crimes, human trafficking and maritime security and safety.
He emphasised the need to enhance co-operation in developing, managing and using Mekong water sustainably and effectively for the common interests of residents along the river’s lower area.
Earlier, the Vietnamese delegation paid respects to the late Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
Minister Lâm also visited the Vietnamese Embassy in Thailand and attended a ceremony launching air routes between Việt Nam and Thailand operated by low-cost airlines VietJet Air. — VNS
