Parliament to elect new President in October

HÀ NỘI — National Assembly's Secretary General Bùi Văn Cường said that the election for the new State President will take place during the National Assembly's October session, according to the resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Việt Nam.

He made the remarks on Monday afternoon at the press conference announcing the results of the 8th extraordinary session of the 15th-tenure National Assembly.

Tô Lâm is currently serving as both the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Việt Nam and State President since the election on August 3 following the passing of General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng in July this year.

Further elaborating on this matter, Nguyễn Thanh Hải, head of the National Assembly's Committee for Deputy Affairs and deputy head of the Party Central Committee's Organisation Commission, stated that, according to the Party Central Committee's plans, from now until the end of 2024, the focus will be on consolidating senior leadership positions and the administration at all levels.

According to Hải, this effort aims to strengthen the Party's leadership role in tasks such as socio-economic development, culture, national defence, security, foreign affairs and preparing for the Party Congresses at all levels leading up to the 14th National Party Congress.

Hải stressed that the consolidation of personnel is to ensure that the political system operates more efficiently, cohesively and robustly, fostering better conditions for socio-economic development, improving people's living standards, enhancing the bond between the Party and the people, and strengthening the people's trust in the Party and the State.

At a meeting with former leaders of the Party and State on August 15, General Secretary and State President Tô Lâm stated that the National Assembly's October 2024 session will complete the consolidation of senior leadership positions. — VNS
