HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam has provided US$100,000 to China to support its government and people in overcoming the consequences of recent devastating floods and earthquakes, the foreign ministry announced Friday.

The assistance originates from the traditional friendship and spirit of mutual support between the two countries.

Torrential rain, flooding, and earthquakes have occurred in many parts of China since early June, causing severe damage and significant losses in both life and property.

Flooding alone resulted in at least 141 people dead or missing, forcing 15 million people to be evacuated from their homes in July.

Previously, on July 7, Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc sent a message to his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang to offer sympathy over the great losses in human lives and property.

The same day, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Phạm Bình Minh also extended his sympathy to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

On Thursday, ASEAN Foreign Ministers issued a statement on the recent floods in China at the suggestion of Việt Nam, the Chair of the Southeast Asian regional bloc in 2020.

In the statement, the ministers extend their deepest sympathies and condolences to the Government and people of China for the tragic loss of lives, displacement of people, destruction of homes and property and extensive damage caused by flooding.

“ASEAN affirms its solidarity with the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China and stands ready to extend its assistance. ASEAN is confident that the People’s Republic of China will overcome the challenges and recover swiftly from the impact of this natural disaster,” the statement says. — VNS
