Election prep nearly complete

Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — Preparations for the national election slated for this Sunday are nearly complete, said Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Trần Anh Tuấn. 
Voters will select deputies to the 14th National Assembly (NA) and all-level People’s Councils for the 2016–2021 tenure. 
Tuấn said the People’s Committees had set up agencies in charge of the election: 63 provincial-level election committees, 712 district-level election committees and 11,162 communal-level election committees. 
There are 184 boards for the NA deputy election, along with 1,096 provincial boards, 6,721 district boards and 79,988 communal boards for the People’s Council election. 
Tuấn said local authorities were working to ensure migrant workers in industrial parks, those accused of crimes and ethnic minorities could vote in the election. 
Authorised agencies have also dealt with complaints and denunciations regarding candidates. 
Local election committees and armed forces have devised plans on responding to unexpected incidents, taking actions to prevent sabotage plots of anti-State organisations and cracking down on crime, he noted. 
According to a resolution of the National Election Council (NEC), there are 184 constituencies for the NA deputy election and the new parliament will comprise 500 deputies. Meanwhile, there are 870 candidates running for those seats. 
Provincial People’s Councils across Việt Namwill have 3,918 deputies to be vetted by 6,528 candidates. At the district level, 24,993 out of 41,777 candidates will be elected as council members. The respective figures for the communal level are 294,055 and 497,312.

According to the NEC office, the results of the election of deputies to the 14th National Assembly (NA) will be announced within 20 days after election day.
At the NEC’s fifth session in Hà Nội yesterday, NA and NEC Chairwoman Nguyễn Thị Kim Ngân said that relevant agencies from central to grassroots levels had done a good job of setting up committees in charge of the election, publicising the lists of voters, and holding meetings to help candidates canvassing for votes.

They had also resolved complaints and denunciations, stepped up communications and geared up to ensure safety on the election day, she added. 
In its report, the NEC Office said final preparations were being made. Voters in some remote areas such as Lai Châu, Khánh Hòa and Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu provinces have already cast ballots. 
The office added that in the next few days, the NEC should focus on finishing candidates’ meetings with voters, readying material conditions for the general election, and guaranteeing security and order for the event. 
A press conference on the preparations is scheduled to take place on Friday. 
After the election results are released, the NEC will steer the settlement of complaints arising and the verification of the NA deputy election winners’ eligibility, the office said. — VNS
