Party chief optimistic about leftist resurgence in Mexico

HÀ NỘI — Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng said yesterday that he believes leftist and progressive forces will gain electoral strength in Mexico.

His optimism was expressed in a meeting in Hà Nội with visiting General Secretary of Mexico’s Labour Party (PT) Alberto Gutierrez. 

Gutierrez congratulated the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) on the success of the 12th National Party Congress and said the country will continue to make greater progress on the Đổi mới (reform) path. 

He briefed Trọng on current developments in Mexico as well as the left-wing movement in Latin America.

He also informed the Parader about the outcomes of working sessions held by the PT delegation with Vietnamese agencies and sectors, as also on the implementation of co-operation agreements between the two parties. 

Trọng acknowledged the solidarity shown by PT and Mexican people with their Vietnamese brethren.

Congratulating PT on its recent successes, he said he believes that the party, together with left-wing and progressive forces in Mexico, will weather difficulties and continue to win at upcoming elections. 

He informed Gutierrez about the current situation in Vietnam and expressed his hope that the two parties will foster extensive and substantive co-operation. 

Earlier, the visitors held talks with a CPV delegation led by Hoàng Bình Quân, Chairman of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations. They discussed ways to strengthen collaboration between the two parties and exchanged views on regional and international matters of mutual concern.

On Tuesday, the Mexican delegation visited the Vietnam News Agency (VNA), which is releasing several publications in Latin America with PT’s support. 

VNA Director General Nguyễn Đức Lợi appreciated the PT’s assistance in training editors as well as in publishing and distributing the news agency’s publications, including the Vietnam Pictorial magazine. 

The PT leader said his party has issued many publications on Việt Nam’s revolution. He hoped that the VNA will co-operate with PT in establishing a centre to publish Vietnamese books in Spanish. — VNS
